If you have a school-aged kid, then chances are she’s been thinking about Valentine’s Day for at least the last month. Store shelves have been stocked with red, pink and white packages of chocolates and candies since mid-January. Plush animals have sat patiently in rows, holding signs that proclaim I Luv U. Boxes of pre-packaged Valentines are now on display for purchase. After all, nothing says  You’re a Special Friend like a mass-produced illustration of Bratz or Transformers.

UGH.

My kids have never exchanged boxed Valentine’s Day cards. Though they may occasionally beg for packages of Bratz and Transformers adorned Valentine’s, or whatever the latest kid craze may be, they’ve always created their own. Their Valentine’s Day cards are usually simple illustrations specifically created for the recipient, each one decorated with stickers, glitter and always a lot of glue.

Valentine's Day

We don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day with a lot of presents and candy, but we do take the time on February the 14th to express a little bit more love and gratitude to our family and friends. Homemade Valentine’s Day cards are a perfectly sweet and simple sentiment.

Valentine's Day

Last year, we tried something new: Valentine’s Day Candy Bouquets. With a little help from me, my kids made close to 50. So that they wouldn’t feel overwhelmed, we began the project a few weeks in advance and made just a few bouquets each day.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Pinking shears
  • Colorful card stock
  • Hole punch
  • Tootsie Pops
  • Green pipe cleaners

Trace a flower shape onto one piece of card stock. Using a coordinating color of card stock, trace a 5-inch wide circle.

Cut the flower shape using regular craft scissors and the 5-inch wide circle using pinking sheers.

Use a hole punch to punch a hole in the middle of each shape.

Place the flower shape on top of the circle, and run a Tootsie Pop through the middle.

Wind two green pipe cleaners down the stick of the Tootsie Pop to create the leaves and stem. Be careful that no sharp ends of the pipe cleaners are exposed.
